Competitions
The number of heats and finalists in each competition will be determined by the event organizers.
Please see the Schedule for times of the competitions’ prelims and finals.
Balboa Strictly
$30/couple
Pure Balboa and/or Bal-Swing is required.
Preliminary Round
Couples will dance to music selected by the Head DJ. There will be three songs of varying tempos in an all skate format.
Final Round
The list of finalists will be posted ahead of time. Judges will look for the following criteria: teamwork, technique/timing, musicality, and showmanship.
- 1st All Skate - All of the couples will dance to a 2-minute DJ song.
- Spotlights - Each couple will get a 1 1/2 minute spotlight dance.
- 2nd All Skate - All of the couples will dance to live music. If the judges feel it is necessary, all of the couples will dance again to an additional song.
Jack & Jill Competitions (Open and Amateur)
$15/person
Dancers will be randomly paired and will dance to music selected by the Head DJ. Anything in the realm of Balboa/Bal-Swing goes in both rounds.
Preliminary Round - During the prelims, dancers will rotate partners for each song. There will be three songs of varying tempos in an all skate format. The number of heats will be determined by the event organizers. Leaders and followers will be selected as individuals to advance to the finals (but will also be judged on how well they dance with their partner).
Final Round - The list of finalists will be posted ahead of time. Dancers will then be randomly paired and will compete as a couple. Judges will look for the following criteria: teamwork, technique and timing, musicality, and showmanship.
- 1st All Skate - All of the couples will dance to a 2-minute DJ song.
- Spotlights
- Open: Each couple will get a 1 1/2 minute spotlight dance.
- Amateur: 2-3 couples will share the spotlight and dance simultaneously to a 1 1/2 minute song.
- 2nd All Skate - All of the couples will dance to live music. If the judges feel it is necessary, all of the couples will dance again to an additional song.
Definition of an Amateur at TCBF
You can compete in the Amateur Jack & Jill at TCBF if you:
- have not made finals in any national balboa competition
- do not teach balboa
Please note that the
final decision as to whether someone will be able to compete as an
amateur is up to the discretion of TCBF event organizers.
